I am interested in imaging dysfunction of retinal blood vessels, and how this corresponds to similar imaging of dysfunction in cerebral blood vessels. The walls of small blood vessels in the central nervous system normally fulfil several functions beyond transport, including maintaining the blood-tissue barrier, changing vessel calibre in response to metabolic or other stimuli, and providing a surface to catalyze molecular reactions. These are relevant to many diseases, and similarities between retinal and cerebral blood vessel wall dysfunction may help us to understand brain disease, diagnose disease or prognosticate outcome, and measure responses to treatment. Comparing retina and brain in this way involves collaboration across domains including biology, medical imaging, image analysis, and statistics, and I’m interested to work with people in any of these areas.
