We are delighted to be joined by Dr Michael Jackson for this SINAPSE webinar. The webinar will explore the carbon cost of imaging techniques and highlight strategies to help implement sustainable solutions. With 2024 likely to be the hottest year in recorded history and the catastrophic effects of the climate crisis visible on a near daily basis, the urgency of sustainability and decarbonisation is increasingly apparent. Imaging techniques and their associated data storage incur a substantial carbon cost which can no longer be ignored. Within clinical practice, the use of imaging is under increasing scrutiny to ensure the benefits of high energy examinations are sufficient to justify this, together with measures to reduce waste within radiology departments. A similar level of scrutiny is also required within research settings. This talk will contextualise the carbon cost of imaging and highlight strategies to help implement sustainable solutions. Dr Michael Jackson is a Consultant Paediatric Radiologist based at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, Edinburgh. He is departmental lead for sustainability and a founding member of the European Society of Radiology’s sustainability subcommittee and the Royal College of Radiologist’s sustainability working group. He is author of the ESR Undergraduate eBook chapter on Sustainable Imaging, and the book Imagining Imaging, which explores the relationship between art and medical imaging. He is the current chair of the British Society for the History of Radiology.Register here
