R2* is the decay rate of the MR signal, and is proportional to brain iron concentration. So, the higher the R2* value, the higher the iron concentration. In this image, the putamen is brighter compared to surrounding brain regions. This means that the putamen has higher R2* and, hence, higher iron concentration.
