The inaugural Annual Scientific Meeting of the Scottish Ultrasound Group (SUG) was held at the Queen’s Medical Research Institute (QMRI), Edinburgh, on the 8th of March 2017. Opened by Helen Mulvana, and followed by Jeff Bamber reviewing 25 years of elastography, the meeting brought together 69 delegates from the universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Strathclyde and West of Scotland.

Disciplines spanned engineering, physics and medicine. Commercial presence was also felt at the meeting with talks from BCF Scotland, French enterprise Theraclian and start-up NovoSound. 24 posters and 9 proffered talks were given.

Turcanu Mihnea from University of Glasgow was awarded the poster prize with a poster entitled: ‘Investigation of LAMP-1 expression in cells treated with ultrasound and microbubbles as an indicator of cell membrane repair’. The Oral presentation winner was Daniel Richards, University of Glasgow who spoke on ‘Epoxy bonded planar piezoceramic transducers for high power applications’.

SUG was founded in June 2013 after recognising a need to formalise ultrasound research in Scotland. The group aims to promote collaboration and networking between ultrasound researchers in Scotland, represent Scottish work on a national and international level, and develop platforms for engagement.
